Cheerleading Outfits

Saturday, April 26th, 2008

According to Cheerleading.org.uk the first ever “Cheer”, in cheer leading terms was in the 1880’s when Princeton Fan’s organised themselves to chant:

Ray, Ray, Ray!
Tiger, Tiger, Tiger!
Sis, Sis, Sis!
Boom, Boom, Boom!
Aaaaah! Princeton, Princeton, Princeton!

In a Locomotive style cheer. Not much, but move things forward 120 years and cheerleading is a big big deal in America and is continuing to grow here in Europe and Ireland. Competitive Cheerleading has become extremely popular and has been made even more popular by movies such as Disneys High School Musical and Bring it on.

Cheerleading has become a hugely popular sport in its own right and is no longer only associated with the side lines of American Football.

Three Key Rules of Cheerleading (which i’ve learned from movies):

1. Dance in Unison and tell your team to win. Encourage the crowd to cheer for their team too (Incase they forget why they’re there).

2. If some one disrespects you all you need to do is dance at them – that will definately get your credibility back and hurt their feelings.

3. If someone steals your chant or dance moves – the best thing to do is come back with the best chant / dance of all time!

So why are cheerleader costumes so popular you ask? I’m no expert on the subject but having seen the odd girlie cheerleading movie (for research purposes only ofcourse – not by choice, ahem). The cheerleading team are an elite group in American High School society. The head cheerleader is a desirable thing of beauty, usually dates the hottest  “jock” and girls want to be her and guys want to be with her. To top it off the uniform acts like an anchor to guys jaws, with a short skirt and pom pom’s the wearer – who by simlpy getting into the outfit is pre-selected as fit, fun and popular; all this before she even opens her mouth. No wonder the cheerleader costume is one of the most popular choices for fancy dress costumes.

Flappers

Wednesday, April 23rd, 2008

The young woman of the 1920’s, or flapper girl as they were called, was a bit friskier than her mother and others before her. She pushed for her individuality, wore her hair short, her skirts short, little to no underwear and rarely wore a bra, she turned down her stockings and showed a bit of knee here and there and she wore makeup and bright colored clothing. Most of all, the flapper girls openly drew attention to their beauty and sexuality.  Flappers weren’t absent minded females who wanted to go against their parents by wearing a different style of clothing. These women had a new outlook on life. They were coming out of wartime and wanted to be seen as not only fun, free spirits but as women who could make up their own minds and follow their own rules.   Flapper Costume Fabulous Flapper Costume Euro 39.99

Coming from a new culture they loved to have fun, dance, show a bit more skin than what was thought ‘appropriate’ in the past and took part in risky behavior including smoking through their signature cigerette holders, drinking and partying. This younger generation was not merely a group of rebels; these women used their minds and believed they could join in activities beyond housekeeping and the traditional feminine roles they had been pushed into in the past.

Flapper Girl costumes have always been popular due to the free spirit that they represent. Tolerance for many of the behaviors that were not seen as ladylike began during this period.  By showing the world that she could party and still be feminine, think and still be beautiful, the flapper helped to shape many of the world’s views during the 1920’s and beyond. So why not show up at your costume party as the original sexy, rebellious and carefree party girl.

How to Make a Toga Costume (for Ladies)

Sunday, April 20th, 2008

One great theme for a costume party is a toga theme. Toga’s are simple to make and therefore there really isn’t any need to go out as splash out on one. All you really need to prepare for a Toga fancy costume party is a bed sheet and a little know how. So go pillage the nearest bed and here’s the know how:

Fancy Dress Costumes

Saturday, April 19th, 2008

Why are fancy dress costumes and costume parties so popular nowadays?

Well for one reason it really makes a night memorable, after a while nights tend to be a little same same. Was X’s party really that different from Y’s? Usually there not, but with a costume party there is so much more to remember about the night.

Wolverine, Evil Jester and Superman

Another great reason is that its a really good social thing, you have so many more reasons to talk to a complete stranger. Superman has every reason to go over to wonder woman and suggest to hatch a plan to eliminate all the super villians in the room. Sometimes a good costume is all you need for an opener and a little attention.

However my favourite reason would have to be the pictures and memories you get.
