Oktoberfest 2011 – Dublin

Thursday, September 29th, 2011

Bring on the tankards and let’s get started. As OktoberFest 2011 kicks off in Dublin on the 22th of September until the 9th of October, get ready for a fortnight full of unrestricted fun. Apart from the copious amount of beer and the delectable cuisines, this Bavarian festival has a lot more to offer.

From traditional costumes to traditional dances, the Oktoberfest is all about keeping the Bavarian traditions alive. And we think the best way to celebrate is to become a part of Bavaria yourself. Teach yourself the Polka or even some German drinking songs or don traditional Bavarian costumes. In fact, that’s the part we love the most, dressing up! It’s an important and fun way to prepare for the upcoming festival. You can dress up in traditional costumes like shorts with decorated suspenders or a quaint dress with a gathered waistband. You can even choose to have your own take on these great traditional costumes. Use your imagination to bring your own personality to the costume!

So this Oktoberfest, no matter where you are, make sure you’re prepared with everything Bavarian.

Get Smurf’d with Smurf Costumes

Monday, August 8th, 2011

They’re little, they’re blue and they’re simple archetypes of everyday people. Meet Grouchy Smurf, Brainy Smurf, Lazy Smurf, Papa Smurf and the rest of the blue-tinted gang!

Ireland has been Smurf’d in 3D! The new movie, The Smurfs, is out in theaters now and we’re rather intrigued by these little blue creatures. So intrigued, we’ve got our own set of Smurf Costumes replete with a jumper, trousers, shoe covers, mittens and a headpiece!

If you’re anything like me an hour and a half of watching the smurf’s film will have you replacing every second noun and pronoun in your vocabulary for hours.

This halloween, your admiration of the little blue guys won’t be complete without one of our Smurf Costumes. Remember to add your own accessories as per the Smurf character’s idiosyncrasies; round black-rimmed glasses for Brainy Smurf, a pencil tucked in behind the ear for Handy Smurf, so on and so forth. Oh yes, we even have a Smurfette Costume!

Limited supplies of face paint will be available from the organisers on the day and a special after party is being arranged in the Button factory afterwards. If your still not convinced, here’s the video from last year!!! How freaky must it have been for the average punter on the street who was suddenly engulfed with the walk of the living dead.

Wig It!

Thursday, April 21st, 2011

I’m tempted to throw in all the wig puns.

Super Jumbo Afro Wig at TheCostumeShop.ie

Have you ever read The Three Golliwigs? I’ve allowed myself only that one! Well, they sport afros much like Jimi Hendrix. We like them; the Golliwogs, Jimi Hendrix and wigs. Not everyone is blessed with eccentric hair, that’s why we have to try harder. It’s either oodles of hair gel or the not-so-temporary MEGA perm.

Sometimes it’s just not worth the effort or the mess. I say, go for wigs! There are endless styles, whacky (and tame) colours and every length to choose from. They’re fuss-free. No combing required. No hair products. Just an attitude.

You can be Elvis, Marilyn Monroe and even Cruella de Vil.

Oh yes, we have wigs too, at TheCostumeShop.ie.

Bad hair day? Wear a wig!

Real Superhero in Seattle

Tuesday, January 11th, 2011

Ever wonder if superheroes were real? Just a plane journey to Seattle will give you all the proof you need!

Seattle currently is under the protection of a team of superheroes calling themselves the Rain City Superhero Movement. Its’ spokesperson Phoenix Jones has spoken out and given details of their crime fighting activity that’s helping to protect the community! They take to the streets every night, in full superhero costume to try prevent crimes, and so far the effect is working.

What do you think, are they crazy vigilantes or are they right to protect the people around them??

Illegal Nurses’ Costume

Monday, January 10th, 2011

"Oh No He Didn't!" Costume Controversy

A theatre in Glasgow has stumbled into some serious trouble. A nurse costume featured in their production of “Robin Hood” has almost landed the actor Dean Park in court over claims it violates the terms of the Geneva Convention.

The British Red Cross threatened legal action after the costume, used for the character Nurse Poltis featured a red ribbon cross on both the hat and tunic. According to the charity, “unauthorised use” of the red cross symbol is an offence under the Geneva Conventions Act and that the use of the symbol must be removed immediately. The British Red Cross insists that the symbol is an internationally agreed symbol of “protection during armed conflicts to safeguard the sick and wounded” and that any use of the cross dilutes its importance and neutrality.

The theatre is deemed to be unimpressed with the legal action, seeing the costume as mere fun- not for it’s political implications. To keep law-makers happy the costume department had to change the cross colours to green.

What’s your thoughts? Should the symbol be kept intact or where the Red Cross being too serious over something clearly meant in jest.

Super Mario Christmas

Wednesday, November 10th, 2010

At the risk of us seeming obsessed with Mario and his friends we came across this article and just had to post about it for two reasons. One that it’s Mario and Two because it’s coming into the festive season and we thought instead of putting Santa right up there we’d ease you in slowly.

So, the idea behind the creative Christmas tree is that for an office party some colleagues decided to “dress up” their boss’ desk to look like a Mario game level. They decorated the tree with character decorations, lights and then added a Starman light to the top. The rest of the desk had characters stuck onto the walls, it’s really creative. We just love seeing people being so imaginative and having their own take on Christmas.

Have you ever seen a Christmas tree this creative? I’m thinking this year our office will have to do something amazing and wear our Santa Costumes!
